What is a good engagement stone other than a diamond or a birthstone?
She's not going to wear an engagement ring and a wedding on the same finger, so I want the wedding ring to have a diamond. But what then do I put on the engagement ring? My goldsmith recommends against an emerald (her birthstone) since they can be a real pain.
What are some good alternatives?
Garnets are traditional engagements stones in England and Europe; the traditioin dates back centuries and has to do with the deep, red color of the stone, though I can't remember specifically what it represents. My brother gave his wife an engagement ring with a garnet that they had found while gem-hunting in the mountains. She gets comlements on it constantly.

I would like to suggest a green stone, that is harder and tougher than emerald and that is green corundum, which is properly called green sapphire. If you could get your hands on a green star sapphire you would have a wonderful and unusual gem!

Or, what about the wonderful world of tourmalines. I have a rare green Maine tourmaline that looks so much like emerald that it is often mistaken for it. Please notice the emerald cut one on the site below:

Demantoid garnet is another rare but wonderfully colored green garnet that has such a beautiful look to it. It isn’t as hard or tough as the others but is so lovely.

I purchased a Tanzanite engagement ring. It had a nice large oval in the center and two large Diamonds on the sides. All in platinum.
Bought it from Steve Moriarty at http://www.tanzanitejewelrydesigns.com
